How to Block a Number on iPhone and Android

Blocking a number stops calls, texts, and FaceTime from reaching you — and the person you block has no idea they've been blocked. Their calls go straight to voicemail and their texts are silently discarded.

Block a Number on iPhone — From Recent Calls

Open the Phone app and go to Recents

Tap the Phone app, then tap Recents at the bottom of the screen to see your call history.

Tap the info button next to the number

Find the number or contact you want to block. Tap the blue (info) icon to the right of their name or number.

Scroll down and tap Block this Caller

Scroll to the bottom of the contact/number details screen. Tap Block this Caller in red.

Confirm by tapping Block

A confirmation sheet slides up. Tap Block. The number is now blocked — calls go to voicemail and texts are silently ignored.

Block a Number on iPhone — From a Text Message

Open the Messages app and find the conversation

Tap the Messages app and open the conversation from the number you want to block.

Tap the name or number at the top of the conversation

Tap the contact name or phone number shown at the very top of the message thread to open their contact card.

Tap Block this Caller

In the contact details panel that appears, tap Block this Caller and confirm. Calls, texts, and FaceTime from that number are now blocked.

View and Unblock Numbers on iPhone

Go to Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts

Open Settings, scroll down to Phone, and tap Blocked Contacts. You'll see every number and contact you've blocked.

Swipe left to unblock

Swipe left on any blocked contact and tap Unblock. That contact can now reach you again immediately.

Also blocks FaceTime and Messages: Blocking a number in the Phone app automatically blocks that person from calling you, texting you via iMessage, and FaceTime calling you — all at once.

Block a Number on Android — From Recent Calls

Open the Phone app and tap Recents

Open the Phone app on your Android phone. Tap Recents (or the clock icon) to see your recent call list.

Long-press the number you want to block

Press and hold on the phone number or contact name. A menu will pop up with several options.

Tap Block / report as spam

Tap Block / report as spam from the menu. A confirmation box appears asking if you also want to report it as spam — this is optional.

Tap Block

Tap Block to confirm. The number is immediately blocked — future calls go straight to voicemail and texts are not delivered to your inbox.

Block a Number on Android — From a Text Message

Open the Messages app and find the conversation

Open Messages and find the text thread from the number you want to block.

Tap the three-dot menu at the top right

Tap the (three-dot) icon in the top right corner of the conversation. A dropdown menu appears.

Tap Block and confirm

Tap Block (or Details → Block & report spam). Confirm the block. The number is now silenced.

To unblock on Android: Open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, and select Settings → Blocked numbers. Tap the X next to any number to unblock it.
