How to Reset Your Apple ID Password (Any Device)

4 min read  ·  Works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows PC

Your Apple ID password unlocks everything — the App Store, iCloud, FaceTime, and more. Here's how to reset it no matter what situation you're in.

If You're on Your iPhone or iPad

1

Open Settings

Tap the Settings app — the gray icon with gears on your home screen.

2

Tap your name at the very top

Your name appears at the top of the Settings screen. Tap it to open your Apple ID settings.

3

Tap Sign-In & Security

You'll see this option near the top of the Apple ID screen.

4

Tap Change Password

Enter your iPhone passcode when prompted — this is the 6-digit code you use to unlock your phone.

5

Enter your new password twice and tap Change

Your password must be at least 8 characters and include a number and an uppercase letter.

If You're on a Computer

1

Go to iforgot.apple.com

Open any browser and type iforgot.apple.com in the address bar.

2

Enter your Apple ID email address

This is the email you used when you created your Apple account — often a Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud address.

3

Choose how to reset

Select whether to reset via your trusted phone number or email. Apple will send you a code or a link.

4

Follow the steps sent to your device or email

Enter the code you receive, or click the link in your email to continue.

5

Create a new password

Choose a strong password you haven't used before with Apple.

If You're Completely Locked Out

1

Go to iforgot.apple.com

Open any browser and visit iforgot.apple.com.

2

Enter your Apple ID and select "I need to reset my password"

Choose this option even if you're not sure of your email — you can try different addresses.

3

Choose Account Recovery

Select this if you don't have access to your trusted phone number or email. Apple will verify your identity — this process can take a few days.

Tips:
• Your new password must be at least 8 characters with a number and uppercase letter
• Don't reuse a recent password — Apple won't allow it
• If you use iCloud Keychain, your saved passwords will update automatically
