How to Stop Spam Calls on iPhone and Android

4 min read  ·  Works on iPhone and all Android phones

Spam calls are one of the most annoying tech problems. Here's how to cut them down dramatically using tools that are already built into your phone — no app required.

On iPhone — Silence Unknown Callers (Best Option)

1

Go to Settings → Phone

Open the Settings app and scroll down until you see Phone. Tap it.

2

Scroll down and tap Silence Unknown Callers

You'll find this option partway down the Phone settings screen.

3

Turn it on

Calls from numbers not in your contacts go straight to voicemail. You'll still see a missed call notification and can call back if it's real.

Block a Specific Number on iPhone:

1

Open the Phone app and go to Recents

Tap the Phone app at the bottom of your home screen, then tap Recents.

2

Tap the ⓘ next to the spam number, then tap Block this Caller

Scroll to the bottom of that screen and tap Block this Caller to permanently block it.

On Android — Filter Spam Calls

Using Google Phone App:

1

Open the Phone app and tap the three-dot menu → Settings

The three dots are usually in the top-right corner of the app.

2

Tap Spam and Call Screen

Turn on See caller and spam ID and Filter suspected spam calls. Spam calls will be silenced automatically.

Block a Specific Number on Android:

1

Open Phone → Recents and long press the spam number

Hold your finger on the number in your recent calls list.

2

Tap Block / Report Spam

Confirm the block. This prevents that number from calling you again.

Extra tips to reduce spam calls:
• Register with the Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov (US) — legitimate companies must honor this
• Don't answer unknown numbers — answering confirms your number is active and leads to more calls
• Never press 1 to be removed — this confirms your number to scammers and makes it worse
